I'm heading to New Orleans this week, so I'm preparing new shows to air next week (May 18-25) so I can upload them on Monday.

In the meantime, here are a couple of announcements:

I will be airing a show live at WWOZ-FM New Orleans on Friday, May 15 from 4pm to 7pm CST. You can tune in at www.wwoz.org, and you can contact the station at 504-568-1234. I'll be playing the best of the classics, as well as what I consider to be the "BEST" of 2009 to date. I will replay the show if I can get it on disc in the next few weeks.

Another thing: There are quite a few new cds out right now that have come my way. I will continue to put them on the air, but I want to make an effort to discuss them on this blog as well. As I get them, I will post comments.

This week we feature three new CD’s:

I am very impressed with the two new works from Blue Note. Wynton puts together a wonderful story about relationships—mixing his great music with some poetry that introduces us to each “story.” Cassandra Wilson’s new album of covers brings a new sound to some familiar music. Her voice is a wonderful instrument, and I a can listen to this cd over and over again.

Finally, Prestige has put out a two-cd set of their best recordings. They seem to put something out like this every year, and each time I am amazed at the depth of the Prestige/Fantasy catalogue. Nothing but heavy hitters here, from Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Dorham, and others. You won’t be disappointed by any of the pieces on this collection. An excellent recording.

It has been a fantastic week here in New Orleans. Perhaps the highlight has been having lunch with Dr. John. It was very informal, and it was peppered with "colorful" comments by Dr. John and Bob French concerning the lack of progress taking place here in New Orleans. Dr. John is very concerned--and his love for his home clearly showed throughout our conversations.

I learned years ago from Mr. Michael Gourrier that you never “rank” your Top 30 list. These cuts are in no particular order, though I will say that I was really impressed with five of these albums in particular: Joe Locke and Geoffery Keezer’s “Live in Seattle,” Christian Scott’s “Rewind That,” Kenny Garrett’s “Beyond the Wall,” Anton Schwartz’s “Radiant Blue,” and Ted Nash’s “In The Loop.” All the albums presented this week, though, are EXCELLENT albums. They would all make excellent additions to your Jazz library. I really enjoyed putting this show together. Next week I will be producing my favorite show of the year—the Best in Classic Jazz. It’s going to be lots of fun.
